Why Israel botched its first attempted moon landing

An Israeli spacecraft mission to the moon failed just moments before it was about to land. The lunar lander crashed into the moon’s surface with pieces of the craft being scattered near the planned landing site.

Mission control declared the mission a failure due to an engine collapse, but Israeli aerospace officials still hailed the mission as a breakthrough for low-cost, small-scale spacecraft.
