Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has resigned. He made his surprising announcement on Instagram, offering an apology for what he called his ‘shortcomings’.
It’s still unclear if President Hassan Rouhani has accepted his wish to stand down. A number of prominent members of parliament have called on Zarif to withdraw his offer. Zarif was the driving force behind Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers.
The deal has been hanging in the balance since US President Donald Trump pulled out and reimposed sanctions on Iran.
