China ups pressure on Canada by detaining second Canadian

Tensions are growing between China and Canada after Beijing detained a second Canadian national.

Chinese state media reports Michael Spavor, a businessman with strong ties to North Korea, is being accused of threatening Chinese national interests. It’s the second arrest of a Canadian citizen after Beijing detained former diplomat Michael Kovrig.

The two arrests appear to be retaliation after Canadian police arrested Meng Wanzhou, a Chinese executive from telco Huawei, at the request of US authorities. Meng has been freed on bail, but remains under house arrest in Canada.
