Russia continues jailing of political activists

In Russia, human rights defender Lev Ponomaryov has been jailed for 25 days for breaking public assembly laws. The 77-year-old was accused of having repeatedly violated conditions imposed on him.

He is said to have called for the support of defendants whom Russian authorities have accused of being extremists and of planning a coup. The imprisonment has drawn strong criticism from rights activists.
