Police catch dozens of suspected gangsters in a global operation

Police in Europe and South America arrested at least 84 suspected gangsters in a massive international crackdown on a powerful branch of Italy’s notorious mafia, officials said.

Hundreds of officers participated in Wednesday’s coordinated operation in Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and Suriname against the ‘Ndrangheta clan, one of Italy’s three main organized criminal groups.

The detainees are suspected of drug trafficking, money laundering, bribery and violence, said the Italian police and Eurojust, the European prosecuting body that deals with cross-border organized crime.
