Bethlehem turns on its Christmas lights.
Bethlehem is beginning to look a lot more like its nick-namesake, the Christmas City. The Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce in Bethlehem sponsored its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony on Friday night.
“It’s not just a holiday,” said Lynn Collins Cunningham of the Chamber. “It’s part of our heritage.” Christmas Eve will mark the 275th anniversary of when the Northampton County officially became a city.
Cunningham said she and others with the Citizens Christmas City Council have been working since the summer for Friday night. Bands, singers and a choir performed in the program leading up to the lighting ceremony.
WFMZ’s Chief Meteorologist Ed Hanna was tapped to lead the crowd in a live countdown where students from nearby elementary schools were asked to help Mayor Robert Donchez flip the switch to turn on the Christmas tree lights.
