An involuntary, imprisoned, resident of Cape Town for more than two decades, Ahmed Kathrada, became a freeman of the city in 2015.
The struggle icon spent 18 years on Robben Island, and a further 8 years in Pollsmoor Prison, after he, along with his fellow Rivonia trialists were sentenced to life imprisonment.
The award is the highest honour which a city council may bestow on any person of distinction.
Former recipients include Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu.
